SWLEOC is located on the Epsom Hospital site (part of Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust). The centre is situated in the Denbies wing which was constructed during the expansion of Epsom Hospital in the 1990’s. The Denbies wing was funded by a donation from Sir Adrian White, a local businessman and philanthropist, during his tenure as chairman of the Epsom General Hospital board. Part of the building had been used to provide the hospital’s A&E department and the Maternity unit. The bulk of the first, second and third floors remained empty. When SWLEOC was conceived, the unused sections of Denbies wing were identified as a suitably central location for the partnership hospitals. Through 2003 the building was fitted out to provide wards on the first and second floors with offices on the second and third floors. The third floor also provided sufficient space to accommodate the four spacious operating theatres, an X-ray suite, equipment storage and the Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU).
Growing the service
As SWLEOC’s workload has grown, the third-floor administrative offices have been relocated to a new satellite building. This has provided space for an expanded pre-theatre area which remains in direct continuity with the expanded, six-theatre operating area. The third floor X-ray suite has been relocated to the second-floor office area and is used for inpatient X-rays. Refurbishment of the adjacent Woodcote wing has provided outpatients clinic rooms on the first floor, additional administrative offices and an outpatient X-ray suite on the third floor.
Kitchens
SWLEOC has a kitchen on each ward and a staff rest room for each clinical area. However, there are no facilities for cooking patient meals and no staff canteen. Patient meals are provided by the main hospital catering service and SWLEOC staff can either bring their own food or use the main hospital’s canteen.
Imaging
The two imaging suites are only able to provide X-ray studies. US-guided injections, CT scans and MR scans can be requested under a contract with a local imaging service provider. These studies are undertaken at five local private healthcare facilities. Nuclear imaging studies are available at St Helier Hospital and can be requested using the Trust’s Clinical Manager system.
Laboratories
Laboratory services are also provided by the Epsom & St Helier NHS Trust through the Clinical Manager system. Likewise, referrals for electrical conduction studies or referrals to other clinicians within the Trust.
Parking
Patient and Staff parking areas are shared with the main hospital.
