Research and outcomes
The Research and outcomes department are essential in daily clinical practice; conducting research to enable ideas and concepts for the improvement of patient care.
- Building a successful research program involves multiple steps, with different challenges such as obtaining funding and establishing necessary training for staff;
- time management as well as research personnel flexibility is vital to ensure success in undertaking any research studies; and
- dedicated quality research time and maintaining consistent interaction with members of the team is also important.
The SWLEOC Research department was established circa 2006. The first research programs conducted were clinical studies involving the oral form of anticoagulant drugs and SWLEOC was one of the highest recruitment centres in the world.
Later the department conducted other studies such as multi centre, multi surgeon surveillance studies as well as National Institute for health and Care Research (NIHR) funded studies.
Patient interaction is involved for assessing eligibility criteria and recruitment process. The team also works in collaboration with the study sponsors and different orthopaedic staff within the UK and overseas centres.
The team is working in collaboration with the Elective Orthopaedic Centre in a designated research department office.
